In a goodwill message to the first dog show organised by the University of Ibadan chapter of the International Veterinary Students Association (IVSA), which took place at the Lagos Polo Club last weekend, Rosiji stated: "We dog people are crazy people. Well, I don't expect that we will change dog people just yet, so, let us indulge in our fancy. Today, the International Veterinary Students Association, Ibadan chapter, is putting together their first ever dog show. Most of the information we have come from the American Kernel Club, and their specific experience. Each country has a different experience and each country does things in a different way." Commenting on the perception that dog shows were elitist affairs, Dr. Yetunde Abiodun, a veterinary doctor and one of the judges at the show, stated that most of the local dogs fall into the mongrel class. "This is not a show for mongrels. Its not that mongrels cannot come here if its well groomed, but think about it, you see mongrels everyday, so it won't be exciting to have a field full of them," he said. A participant at the show, Mr. Muyiwa Aderoju, a banker, commenting on the predominance of South-African breeds at the show, explained that traditional guard dogs like the Rotweiler and Doberman were either too aggressive or unpredictable in character, making it unsafe to leave children in the care of such dogs. "That's why I got a Boer Boel, a South-African breed as a dog. I can leave my daughters with the dog and be rest assured that they would come to no harm . As for our local breeds, they are neither here nor there. That's just it," he maintained. President of the IVSA, University of Ibadan chapter, Teju Ayorinde, in her welcome address, said the show was organised to create a forum for dog lovers to meet and exchange ideas on how to relate with their pets and help streamline standards in dog breeding. The IVSA, she said, has just two chapters in Nigeria at the University of Ibadan and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The overall prize of a Labrador Puppy at the event, which featured Alsatians, Pit Bull Terriers, Rotweilers, a Dalmatian and a couple of Boer Boels, among others, was won by Sweetheart, a Lhasa Apso, owned by Mr. Gbemisola Dotun. |
